Waikiki by Mark Ley

Acrylic on canvas- unframed 26" h x 76" w (can be hung vertically or horizontally) Growing up on Hawaii Island, Mark Ley spent his life in the ocean. Surfing it, diving it, chasing it across coastlines and continents. From the reef passes of Central America to the lava shelves of Hawaiʻi. Everything he makes begins there. Not as metaphor. As fact. From up here the ocean stops pretending to be water. It becomes something older — a skin, a pulse, a great turquoise animal breathing beneath you. This is Waikiki seen the way the frigate bird sees it, the way the trade winds see it: not as a beach, not as a postcard, but as pure motion caught in the act of becoming. Every white slash across this canvas is a line of swell standing up to die beautifully. That's what waves do — they travel two thousand miles across open Pacific just to unravel on a reef in front of strangers, and they do it without complaint, without ceremony, over and over, forever. There is something holy in that kind of extravagance. The wind writes and the water erases, and neither one ever wins, and the argument between them is the most gorgeous thing on Earth. I painted this the way the wind works — in passes, in fits, dragging and lifting, letting the surface remember every gesture. Flecks of red and gold surface like surfers scattered across the lineup, small and improbable, waiting their turn inside the machinery of the sea. Stand back and it's Waikiki from a mile up. Stand close and it's chaos, texture, appetite. Both are true. The ocean has never once held still, and neither does this. - Mark K Ley
