Pair of Antique Afghan Embroidered Textile Fragments - Rita Okrent Collection (AA516)

A pair of matching embroidered textile fragments, circa early 1900s, likely salvaged from the hem of a woman's dress given their scale, hand-stitched in colorful silk floss in multiple horizontal bands of scrolling and geometric motifs. The repeating pattern includes interlocking S-scrolls and small floral forms in maroon, green, blue, and orange on a cream ground. Sourced in Afghanistan in the late 1970s. Why We Love It The repeating scrollwork is neat and well executed. Maroon, green, blue, and orange combine without overwhelming the design. Detailed handwork, preserved even apart from the garment it came from.
