Typical bottlenecks include: 1GbE network storage: typically tops out around 100-120 MB/s and is usually too slow for LTO-8 streaming. Single USB hard drives: many USB HDDs cannot sustain high enough real-world write/read speeds across long backup jobs. Slow or fragmented source storage: can cause the tape drive to start and stop, reducing performance and increasing wear. For best results, use fast local SSD storage, RAID storage, or 10GbE-or-faster network storage capable of sustained throughput. Backup or Archive Software Software Required LTO tape drives require compatible backup, archive, or LTFS software to operate the drive, write data, restore files, and manage tape workflows. Software is sold separately unless otherwise specified. Examples include LTFS, Hedge Canister, Archiware P5, YoYotta, Veeam, Retrospect, and other software that supports standalone IBM LTO tape drives. Operating Humidity 20%–50% RH Maintain a practical operating target of 20%–50% relative humidity whenever possible.
