More likely than not, the plant you saw was Tulsi, otherwise known as the queen of herbs, worshipped by Hindus for more than 5000 years. As part of their reverence for the plant (which also features prominently in Ayurvedic practice) Hindus are encouraged to grow Tulsi for reasons of spirit and health. There are three types of Tulsi: Tulsi Krishna, Tulsi Rama and Tulsi Vana. Tulsi Vana, also known as Wild Leaf Tulsi, or Forest Type Tulsi grows wild throughout the plains of India and the Himalayas. It was there that proponents of Ayurveda first began to prescribe the herb for a wide range of ailments. Typically consumed in the form of a tisane, Tulsi Vana was thought to relieve everything from asthma, bronchitis, colds and flu, to headaches, gastric disorders, joint pain and rheumatoid arthritis.
