Wildeberg - Coterie Grenache & Syrah - 2022
This cuvée comes from selected plots within the Coastal Region, South Africa. The Grenache primarily comes from old vines grown on the granite soils of Piekenierskloof, while the Syrah is harvested from the Swartland terroirs, renowned for their granite and schist soils. Under a Mediterranean climate tempered by Atlantic influences, the grapes ripen slowly, developing a beautiful concentration while maintaining freshness and balance, hallmarks of great South African wines. The grapes are hand-harvested then vinified separately to preserve the identity of each grape variety and terroir. Fermentations are carried out with wild yeasts in open vats, with gentle extraction favoring elegance over power. After blending, the wine is aged for approximately 12 months in foudres and French oak barrels, mostly second-fill or older, to refine the structure without masking the fruit's expression. This low-intervention winemaking reflects the estate's philosophy, focused on purity and balance. This wine reveals notes of black cherry, raspberry, ripe plum, accompanied by nuances of violet, wild thyme, black pepper and a smoky touch. On the palate, the attack is ample and silky, supported by remarkable freshness that balances the generosity of the fruit. The tannins are fine, providing structure and depth without heaviness. The finish is elegant and spicy, revealing the full complementarity between the richness of Grenache and the finesse of Syrah.
