Camp overview: First, we'll take a popular melody in the G position to make sure we're familiar with it. Then, we'll move that melody to C, D, & F positions and learn how to play a break for it. Not only breaks, though! We'll also learn how to approach backup in each of those positions, AND include some of our favorite licks that get us out of sticky spots that we may find ourself in. Once you know how to play in G, C, D, and F positions, you can play along with any song in any key with the help of the capo. Real banjo players can do this, and you need to know get better at it. Sessions: Bill, Kristin, and Ben will alternate teaching throughout each hour, creating a dynamic and engaging learning experience while allowing students to benefit from each instructor's unique expertise. Skill Level: The camp will be aimed at intermediate-advanced pickers. However, beginners: please buy a ticket and attend because the things we're teaching are hard to find, and you WILL need this instruction as you progress. Kristin Scott Benson Kristin Scott Benson is a six-time IBMA Banjo Player of the Year, a 2018 Steve Martin Prize winner, and a 2024 American Banjo Hall of Fame inductee, widely recognized for her impeccable timing, tone, and artistry on the instrument. Since 2008, she has driven the sound of the Grammy-nominated, award-winning band The Grascals, breaking barriers as one of the first women to secure a top-tier banjo role in bluegrass. Beyond her celebrated solo and collaborative work—including the 2023 album Pick Your Poison with her husband Wayne Benson—she remains one of the most respected and influential banjo players in modern bluegrass. Bill Evans Bill Evans is a celebrated American banjo player, instructor, and author, known for both his virtuosity on the instrument and his deep knowledge of its history. He has performed with progressive and traditional bluegrass groups including Cloud Valley, Dry Branch Fire Squad, Bluegrass Intentions, and Due West, while also leading innovative ensembles like the Bill Evans String Summit and collaborating with top bluegrass musicians. As an influential teacher and writer, Evans has taught at universities, led workshops nationwide, authored instructional books such as Banjo for Dummies, and was honored with the Steve Martin Banjo Prize and induction into the American Banjo Hall of Fame. All sessions will be recorded, and registrants will be sent a private link where they can access the material (video, tabs, & other downloads) as often as they need. Can I purchase access to the camp after it happens? No, you can't. You must purchase a ticket prior to the event start day & time. Do I have to attend live? No, since the event will be recorded, those who can't make it live will have access after the event is over. Be sure to purchase your access BEFORE the event! Do all the camp sessions happen in one evening? Yes, they will be presented back-to-back with a break between each session for bathroom visits and banjo-tuning. How do I access the live online camp on September 22? All registrants will receive a private viewing link the day of the online camp. Do I need any special equipment to attend? An internet connection with a device like a computer or iPad is all that's needed. How will I be able to ask questions of the instructors? While we there will be no need for a microphone or webcam, we will be receiving questions beforehand via the event forum page HERE and during the event on the live chat.
