PRODUCTION NOTES VINTAGE: 2022 APPELLATION: Sonoma Valley VARIETAL(S): 52% Petite Sirah 19% Alicante Bouschet 15% Grenache 14% Carignane VINEYARD: Mathis Vineyard HARVEST: September 14, 2022 AGING: 22 months, in 60-gallon, neutral French oak barrels ALCOHOL: 14.8% CASES: 138 pH: 3.64 TA: 5.99 g/L VINEYARD DESCRIPTION Mathis Vineyard covers a 7.5 acre plot, situated in the hills above the town of Sonoma, on a warm, south-facing slope. The soils are volcanic in origin, low vigor, with underlying rhyolitic rock. The nearby San Francisco Bay, visible from the vineyard, provides a cooling influence and allows for extended hang time at harvest. PRODUCTION NOTES 2022 was the second in a string of three extreme drought years, with only 10 inches of rain during the winter/spring. Spring and budbreak was very early: about 3 weeks before average with budbreak in February. The dry conditions led to a low yield of small berries with concentrated flavors and high acidity. Mercifully, the summer months passed without any extreme heat events which allowed for some additional hang time. The four varietals were harvested together on September 14th and co-fermented in two 1.2-ton open-top tanks. The cap was managed with 2 daily punch downs. The cuvee reached dryness after 12 days and was pressed off the skins 2 days later. Prior to bottling, the wine was aged with minimal intervention in neutral French oak barrels for 22 months. Drinking very well at release, the 2022 Überblend’s chalky tannins and bright acidity ensure it will continue to improve and evolve well into future decades. ACCOLADES 93 Mathis Wine 2022 Überblend Mathis Vineyard Red Blend (Sonoma Valley). Ripe cherry, candied blueberry and lilac aromas dance on the nose of this electric Petite Sirah-dominated blend. The palate brings in a savory edge, with flavors of baked berries, sage and fresh thyme mingling across a finish that balances neatly between rousing acidity and plush tannin. —T.R.C. abv: 14.8% Price: $42
