HOW TO MAKE WHEATPASTE Wheatpaste is a simple but surprisingly strong glue made from basic household ingredients. If you cook, the process is a little like making a roux: flour thickens the mixture, sugar adds extra stickiness, and salt acts as a stabilizer, especially helpful in colder climates. WHAT YOU’LL NEED 3¾ cups water, divided ¼ cup flour ½ cup sugar 1 tablespoon salt MAKE THE PASTE Bring 3 cups of water to a boil. In a separate bowl, combine ¼ cup of flour with ¾ cup of water. Mix until smooth and free of lumps. Slowly pour the flour mixture into the boiling water, stirring continuously. Continue stirring over the heat for approximately 3 minutes, or until the mixture begins to thicken. Remove it from the heat and immediately stir in ½ cup of sugar. Add 1 tablespoon of salt and mix well. Let the paste cool completely—and you’re ready to go. This recipe makes approximately one quart (32 fl oz) of wheatpaste. APPLYING YOUR PIECE Work quickly, because wheatpaste dries fast. Apply a layer of paste to the installation surface, position the poster and smooth it down. Once it is in place, apply another layer of paste over the poster to help seal and protect it. It’s impressively sticky stuff for something made from flour, sugar, water and salt.
