EPU Almaviva 2023
Almaviva was born from a joint venture between 2 legendary winemaking entities, The Baron Phillipe de Rothschild and Concha y Toro. The combination of French winemaking tradition, with the unique soil composition and climate of Chile's Maipo Valley. The estate vineyards are located in Puente Alto, and are world renowned for their Cabernet Sauvignon, in thanks to their wonderful gravelly soils and cooler climate with a strong day-night time temp shift which helps to preserve the acidity and elegance, Almaviva marries Bordeauxesque structure with Chilean generosity. EPU, meaning 2 in Mapudungun, is Almaviva's second wine, created with the goal of offering an more approachable expression of their terroir and house style. 2023 was a hot, dry vintage in the Maipo Valley, which led to an accelerated ripening leading to slightly earlier harvests. Careful fruit selection was needed to ensure both fruit and physiological ripeness. Comprised of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, which is supported by Carmenere, this wine is immediately inviting, offering red fruit aromas such as cassis, cherries, strawberry alongside savory herbs and tobacco. On the palate, this wine is juicy and supple with polished tannins that make this a more approachable wine that Almaviva would be at this point. However, this wine also has the potential to age for 10 years.
