Wheel 2: Summer Set with Krista Brosseau

Feels like long evenings, something cold in your hand, and pouring from something you made. In this class, we’ll focus on creating functional drinkware meant to be used, shared, and passed around. Think pitchers, cups, goblets, and carafes—pieces that live on the table all summer long. You’ll build on your wheel skills by exploring taller forms, refined pouring lips, and cohesive sets. We’ll look at a range of approaches: throwing and altering, throwing in sections and assembling, and shaping forms that feel both intentional and expressive. Whether it’s a wine goblet, a margarita pitcher, or a simple water carafe, the goal is to create pieces that feel good to hold, pour from, and use. By the end, you’ll have a small collection of “sippers”—a bevy of forms designed to be enjoyed with others. Prerequisites This class is intended for students who have taken at least three wheel classes (or equivalent). You should be able to: Confidently center up to 3 lbs of clay using the coning method Consistently create intentional forms Be comfortable dissecting and recycling your work as part of the learning process What You’ll Learn Techniques explored may include: Throwing cohesive sets (cups, tumblers, and serving pieces) Scaling forms up to create a larger pitcher Keeping proportions and profiles consistent across multiples Pulling and attaching handles for pitchers Refining rims, spouts, and pouring lips Trimming for clean, unified bases Using glaze and surface finish to tie a set together The exact rhythm of the class will shift with the group—following curiosity, challenges, and those moments where individual pieces start to come together as a set.
