Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829–1869) was the first American-born pianist and composer to achieve international fame, showing prodigious musical talent from an early age and later studying in France despite being rejected by the Paris Conservatory. Influenced by figures like Berlioz and praised by Chopin, he gained popularity in Europe with compositions inspired by Creole and African American melodies, then returned to the United States in 1853 to tour widely and bring concert music to broader audiences. His piece Souvenir de Porto Rico reflects his Caribbean travels through lively Latin American rhythms and follows a “patrol” style, beginning softly, building to a dramatic climax, and gradually fading away. In the event that a bass saxophone is not available, the part can be covered by a second baritone saxophone, a string bass, or even a tuba, with the included parts.
