Harper & Row, 1974. First U.S. edition. Hardcover in cloth with custom made 4-mil polyester jacket, with protected price-clipped dust jacket that has some edge wear. Photographs taken by Riefenstahl between 1962 and 1969 of mostly the Mesakin and some of the Korongo, Nuba tribes in the southwest corner of the Nuba mountains in Kordofan of the Sudan in East Africa. At the time, there was no all-season road through the region and the Nuba men and women, who generally went out and about without many clothes, lived close to nature with little contact with the outside world. According to the photographer, most of the Mesakin Nuba had never before seen a white woman. The book begins with an essay by Riefenstahl about the social life of the Nuba. Whatever one may think about Riefenstahl's notorious life in the 1930s, this is an excellently designed and printed book with fascinating photographs in color and black-and-white. Summary: The Last of the Nuba (1973/1974) by Leni Riefenstahl is a photographic book that documents the lives, culture, and traditions of the Nuba people living in the Nuba Mountains of southern Sudan. The book contains hundreds of photographs and short descriptive texts rather than a continuous narrative. The book is based on Riefenstahl’s visits to the Nuba Mountains between the early 1960s and the 1970s. During these trips she lived among several Nuba communities and photographed their daily activities, ceremonies, and traditions. The photographs show many aspects of Nuba life, including: Ceremonial wrestling matches, which were an important part of their culture. Body painting and decoration, where people used ash, clay, and pigments to create intricate designs on their skin. Rituals and festivals, such as dances, courtship ceremonies, and coming-of-age events. Daily life, including farming, herding cattle, and village activities. Riefenstahl portrays the Nuba as a community closely connected to nature, emphasizing their physical strength, athleticism, and artistic body decoration. Many images highlight muscular wrestlers, painted bodies, and dramatic poses, presenting the Nuba culture as visually striking and harmonious. The central idea of the book is to document and celebrate what Riefenstahl believed to be a traditional culture that was disappearing as modernization and outside influences spread into the region. She intended the photographs to preserve the Nuba’s way of life and beauty before it changed or vanished. The book became an international bestseller and helped revive Riefenstahl’s career as a photographer. However, it also sparked debate. Some critics praised the images as powerful ethnographic and artistic records, while others argued that the photographs romanticized the Nuba and reflected the author’s fascination with physical perfection. The Last of the Nuba is a photographic exploration of the culture, rituals, and physical artistry of the Nuba people, intended to preserve a visual record of a traditional African society that the author believed was disappearing.
