Apache Plume is a small, airy shrub with white rose-like flowers that give way to feathery pink seed plumes — and those plumes are arguably more striking than the flowers. As the fruits mature, the plumes catch the light and seem to shimmer in the breeze, creating a soft, almost ethereal effect. It blooms repeatedly throughout the warm season whenever moisture is available. Native to rocky, arid habitats from Texas west to California, Apache Plume asks for very little: full sun, sharp drainage, and low water. Once established it is extremely drought-tolerant and deer-resistant.
