nThe Mirage IIIO served as one of the Royal Australian Air Force’s primary supersonic fighter aircraft during the Cold War era. Operated by No. 3 Squadron RAAF from 1967 to 1986, the Mirage IIIO provided Australia with a fast and capable interceptor and ground attack platform during a period of heightened regional tensions and rapid advances in military aviation technology. Based at RAAF Base Butterworth and later RAAF Base Williamtown, the aircraft formed a key part of Australia’s regional air defence capability and frontline fighter force for almost two decades. Derived from the French Mirage III design, the Mirage IIIO combined high-speed performance, delta-wing agility, radar-guided interception capability, and strike capability, making it one of the RAAF’s most important fighter aircraft of the era. No. 3 Squadron operated Mirage IIIOs extensively throughout the Asia-Pacific region, regularly conducting air defence duties, multinational exercises, and deployments in support of Australia’s strategic commitments and the Five Power Defence Arrangements. Following No. 75 Squadron’s deployment to Butterworth in 1967, No. 3 Squadron became the first RAAF unit to operate the Mirage IIIO(A) ground-attack variant, introducing an expanded strike capability to the RAAF Mirage fleet.
