Pink Kissing Gourami A well-known food fish in its native region, this is a captive-bred variant of a green wild fish. ‘Pink Kissers’ are not ideal for a peaceful community aquarium due to their large adult size and moderately aggressive behavior. The common name of this species comes from its tendency to lock jaws or ‘kiss’ other fish during aggressive encounters. Because of their temperament, keepers have ample opportunity to observe this behavior in captive groups. An aquarium measuring 150cm/5ft in length is really the minimum size recommended for this species, and tankmates should be sturdy with large barbs, such as Tigers (Puntigris), which are a suitable choice, even though this nearly toothless fish isn’t much of a predator. It’s important to leave a small gap between the water’s surface and the coverslides so that the fish can occasionally breathe atmospheric air. Careful selection of plants is necessary, as all but the hardiest species (e.g., Java fern, Anubias sp., etc.) will be affected by browsing as the fish search for biofilm. Green and marbled varieties are also available, along with a Balloon form that remains smaller due to missing vertebrae. Farmed extensively in pools beneath pig pens, Kissers flourish in these environments thanks to the abundant blooms of plankton they filter from the water. While we wouldn’t recommend replicating this method of husbandry, it’s evident that these fish thrive on large quantities of small foods, even as adults.
