Kiyoshi Awazu (1929–2009) Born in Tokyo in 1929 and passed away in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, in 2009, Kiyoshi Awazu was a self-taught artist and designer who learned painting and design independently. In 1955, he received the Japan Advertising Artists Club Award for his poster Give Back the Sea (Umi o Kaese). As one of the leading figures of postwar Japanese graphic design, Awazu expanded the boundaries of visual expression by embracing image reproduction and mass production through design and printing technologies. In 1960, he joined the Metabolism movement, a collaborative group of architects and designers that sought to rethink the future of cities and society. In 1977, he exhibited his Graphism Trilogy at the São Paulo Biennial. From the 1980s onward, Awazu conducted research into pictographic writing systems and Native American rock art. Throughout his life, he continually explored the nature of images, communication, and humanity's place within the broader ecosystem of all living things. The foresight, originality, and holistic vision of his creative practice continue to exert a profound influence on contemporary art and design today.
