This project-based class uses predominately wheel-based techniques while blending in elements of handbuilding and surface decoration to help students create complex, functional forms. Kay will lead students through how to make a set of items for the kitchen that require technical skill building off of basic bowls and cylinders. Forms covered include: pitcher, grater plate, berry bowl with plate, juicer, and apple baker. Students will be working with 1-5 pounds of clay at a time. Kay will help with everything from tips on working with larger amounts of clay to proper techniques for making spouts & handles. Kay’s perspective on form and function make this an interesting 4 weeks of exploration for anyone looking to grow their proficiency at the potter’s wheel. In order for every participant to get something out of this class, we ask for a basic understanding of wedging, centering and pulling 1-2# of clay on the wheel as a prerequisite for this session. Students should come to class with a bag of preferred cone 6 clay and tools for throwing/trimming. Some studio tools are available.
