Afghan hand-knotted Kunduz rugs and carpets are available in various sizes and are produced in villages surrounding Kunduz in northern Afghanistan. The rich red of these rugs is created by boiling the madder root, which grows wild in Afghanistan. They are then finely knotted from Karakul sheep's wool, making them hard-wearing, whilst the colour and design make them highly practical. Afghan Kunduz and Afghan Khal Mohammadi rugs may occasionally look quite similar. However, the Kunduz are generally finer-knotted and have more detail in their patterns.
