Gone to Earth by Mary Webb - Illustrated Book
Gone to Earth by Mary Webb - Hardback Book illustrated by Norman Hepple with woodblock prints. 1967 Print edition. Condition: all pages present, which is most important. Some light foxing and no dust jacket. Originally published in 1917, Mary Webb's Gone to Earth tells the story of Hazel, a free thinking young woman in tune with the natural world around her and hounded by men. Accompanied by best friend Foxy, Hazel is a hero for the countryside then and now. Fiercely anti-hunting with beautiful descriptions of nature. One for lovers of nature, animals, poetry and freedom. A good review by Jane Dougherty here. Also made into the 1950 film 'Gone to Earth' by Powell and Pressburger starring Jennifer Jones. Available on YouTube here but better on a big screen. Mary Webb 1881 - 1927 was a romantic writer and poet based in Shropshire. Other titles include Precious Bane.
