The composition is tall and vertical in the original scroll, which we’ve carefully adapted for the shirt so the line weight, brush pooling, and dry-brush energy read clearly at a glance. Alongside the staff runs a terse challenge from the Zen hall – “If you answer, you get the staff; if you do not answer, you get the staff”. A reminder of the more physical and direct aspects of Zen training, where getting hit with a staff is not an uncommon occurrence (which can help relieve muscle tension and is not meant to punish, but to help focus). The artist Nakahara Nantembō (1839-1925) was a leading Rinzai Zen monk and an influential calligrapher of the Meiji and Taishō eras. His Dharma name “Nantembō” refers to the teaching staff he famously carved from nanten wood – a tool and symbol he used to cut through hesitation in training. His zenga is known for its large scale, vigorous strokes, and uncompromising directness; this piece distills that energy into a single, commanding motif.
