Finca l’Argatà 2022 Darmós, DO Montsant, Southern Catalonia Varietals: Garnatxa Producer: Joan d’Anguera The Vibe This is the flagship single-vineyard wine of the Joan d’Anguera estate. While Altaroses captures the vibrant, approachable side of Montsant, Finca l’Argatà is a deeper and more contemplative expression of old-vine Garnatxa grown on chalky sandy soils in Darmós. Sourced from bush-trained vines between 30 and 60 years old, it reflects the brothers’ elegant, low-intervention approach to biodynamic farming and their commitment to transparency over extraction. Rather than leaning into the dense, heavily oaked style once associated with Montsant, Finca l’Argatà is lifted, finely structured, and intensely site-driven. With remarkably low yields and two full years of ageing in old French oak, this is a serious Mediterranean wine built for longevity, finesse, and evolution in bottle. The Taste Pure, luminous, and layered. Aromas of raspberry, sour cherry, wild strawberry, and crushed forest berries unfold alongside Mediterranean herbs, dried flowers, and a subtle balsamic lift. The old French oak adds texture and quiet depth without masking the fruit, allowing the wine’s mineral core and silky tannins to remain at the forefront. The palate is energetic yet composed, balancing fleshy red fruit with vibrant acidity and a long, mineral finish marked by saline tension and remarkable freshness. Elegant rather than powerful, it shows the more refined and terroir-focused side of modern Garnatxa. The Story The grapes come exclusively from a north-facing 5-hectare parcel within the renowned L’Argatà site in Darmós, one of the driest areas of Montsant. The vineyard sits on chalky sandy soils at 50–80 metres altitude and is farmed biodynamically under dry-farming conditions. Yields are exceptionally low at just 2,000 kg/ha (12 hl/ha), concentrating both freshness and intensity. Harvested entirely by hand between late September and mid-October, the grapes undergo spontaneous alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in concrete vats using indigenous yeasts. The wine is then transferred to old French oak barrels in December 2022, where it rests for 24 months before bottling in January 2025. Certified organic by CCPAE and produced according to Demeter biodynamic principles. Best Enjoyed With Serve at 14–16°C. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended in its youth. Pairs beautifully with game, slow-roasted lamb, and aged sheep’s milk cheeses. Its earthy, mineral profile also complements Mediterranean dishes such as mushroom rice, paella, roasted vegetables, and slow-cooked legume stews.
