The plum blossom motif is a traditional auspicious design that symbolises resilience, vitality, nobility, and longevity. Blooming beautifully in the cold of winter, it represents the strength to overcome hardship and welcome new beginnings. Kikkō (亀甲) literally means “tortoiseshell.” It is a traditional Japanese geometric motif based on the hexagonal shape of a tortoise shell. Because the tortoise has long been associated with longevity in Japan, the Kikkō motif represents longevity, good fortune, and protection from evil or misfortune. The vivid yellow colour gives this piece a bright and striking presence. The smooth, lustrous surface of the rinzu (figured silk satin) adds a beautiful sheen and allows you to enjoy its distinctive silky texture. There are brown age-related stains throughout the piece. They do not prevent the piece from being worn and are generally more noticeable when viewed closely.
