A Christmas Story to Remember: On Christmas night in 1776, General George Washington and his weary Continental Army faced bitter cold, ice, and a difficult journey across the Delaware River. As darkness settled, Washington gathered his soldiers. The password for the operation was “Victory or Death.” For the men who crossed the Delaware that night, “Victory or Death” was more than just a way to identify fellow soldiers, it also expressed their willingness to risk their lives for the cause of American independence. Their daring crossing led to the surprise attack on the Hessian forces at Trenton the following morning. At about 8:00 a.m. on December 26, the Americans attacked from several directions. Caught by surprise, the Hessians struggled to organize their defense. American artillery and infantry surrounded the Hessian position. Unable to escape, they were forced to abandon their artillery including six cannons seized by the Continental Army. The American victory was relatively small in terms of battlefield size, but its impact on morale was enormous. At a time when the America's future seemed uncertain, the courage and determination of Washington and his soldiers helped inspire renewed hope for independence. Their determination became an important turning point in the Revolutionary War.
