Tibetan Shakyamuni Buddha Thangka - 2'3 x 2'11

A finely painted Tibetan thangka depicting Shakyamuni Buddha surrounded by scenes from his life and teachings. The historical Buddha sits prominently at the center upon a lotus throne, while numerous narrative vignettes unfold throughout the surrounding landscape. Temples, mountains, rivers, animals, monks and celestial figures create a densely populated visual world, culminating in the reclining Buddha’s parinirvana near the lower edge. The intricate painting is distinguished by a beautiful palette of turquoise, celadon, mineral blue, coral, ochre and deep red. The painting retains its traditional textile mounting, with a golden-yellow inner border and richly patterned plum-colored silk brocade surround. Both devotional image and narrative painting, the thangka rewards close viewing with an extraordinary abundance of finely rendered detail.
