White & Newton Oval Teak Extending Dining Table – 1960s

A beautifully designed mid-century oval dining table by White & Newton of Portsmouth, one of the respected British furniture makers of the 1960s. The company’s principal designers during this period included Arthur Edwards and Philip Hussey, whose work is known for its elegant proportions and carefully considered construction. This table is crafted in warm teak and features a particularly clever extending mechanism. The additional leaf is folded and stored neatly beneath the main tabletop when not in use. By pulling out the mechanism, the extension can be accessed and unfolded, creating a larger oval dining surface while maintaining the graceful lines of the original design. The table is also distinguished by its flush joints between the apron and legs, creating a continuous, clean-lined structure. This construction not only gives the table a refined appearance but also provides a strong and exceptionally solid framework.
