Portuguese Stoneware Wine Bottle

This distinctive vintage Portuguese stoneware wine bottle was produced by Fábrica Cerâmica Madalena of Vila Nova de Gaia for the historic wine house J. M. da Fonseca Sucessores, with impressed marks for both found on the vessel. Dating to approximately the 1920s–40s, the bottle features a warm brown glazed surface and a pastoral landscape with a prominent tree, believed to be post-production hand-painted decoration that gives the utilitarian form a wonderfully decorative character. A handsome example of early Portuguese commercial stoneware, it measures approximately 9.5” high and is in good vintage condition with no significant chips or cracks.
