A large capacity is only worth it if the ducts can deliver itThe ADD-ON system adds a heat pump to an existing electric furnace: a coil is installed on the furnace and the outdoor unit heats and cools through the same ducts. The furnace's electric elements are only used as backup. The Central Heat Pump ADD-ON ARCOAIRE H4H5S ION | 5 Tons - 60,000 BTU (Coil EVD4X 24.5 in.) - R410A pairs the H4H5S60AKAAA outdoor unit with the EVD4X60M24A coil.At this size, the heat pump produces a lot of heating or cooling, but it is the duct system that decides what actually reaches the rooms. Ducts that are too narrow, leaky or poorly balanced waste a good part of the capacity you paid for. In a large house, where air has to travel long distances and serve several levels, this question comes first. The main trunk, the branches and the dampersThe duct system starts at the plenum, above the coil, with a main trunk running under the floors. Branches leave it toward each register, and risers go up to the upper floor. In a large house, the branches farthest from the trunk are often the weakest: air takes the shortest path, and rooms at the end of the run receive less than the others.Balancing dampers, placed where the branches start, correct these differences. They still have to exist and be accessible. Grilles matter too: a grille too small for the airflow it receives whistles and blows too hard. We examine these elements during the visit.Static pressure, the pulse of the duct systemStatic pressure measures the resistance the duct system puts up against the blower. Every element adds to it: the filter, the coil, elbows, undersized ducts, insufficient returns. The furnace manufacturer states the maximum pressure at which its blower delivers the intended airflow. Beyond that, airflow drops, the blower strains and gets noisy, and the heat pump loses capacity.Adding a coil to a duct system that is already tight can push it past that limit. That is why we assess the ducts before the quote, and measure static pressure at commissioning to set the blower accordingly.Returns in a finished houseReturns are often the weak point of large duct systems, especially upstairs. Adding them in a house with finished walls and ceilings takes method: running through a joist bay, a closet, an existing bulkhead or an interior wall. We look for the least disruptive route, and the quote specifies the work and its location before you make your decision.A finished basement raises the same question for the plenum and trunk: a drop ceiling or an accessible bulkhead makes things simpler, a closed drywall ceiling makes them harder. We note it from the visit onward.Duct leaksA leaky duct system loses warm or cool air before it reaches the rooms. In a heated basement, that loss stays in the house; in a garage, a crawl space or an attic, it is lost. Accessible joints on the plenum and trunk are sealed with a product designed for that purpose, and sections in unheated spaces must be insulated. We systematically seal the joints around the coil and the plenum we modify. When the ducts are not enoughSometimes the existing duct system cannot carry the airflow of a 5-ton system, even with a few corrections. Two paths are then open: enlarge the sections that restrict airflow, or choose a smaller size better suited to the existing ducts. We present both, with what each involves, and the quote reflects the option chosen. The 5-ton size and the ION seriesThe 5-ton size is the largest common residential size. It suits a very large house on two or three levels, a heavily glazed house or an extended house whose duct system serves many rooms, in Longueuil or on the South Shore. These examples are only a guide. A room-by-room load calculation establishes the cooling load; in an ADD-ON, the furnace's electric elements cover the deep cold, and an oversized unit would cool in short cycles. The H4H5S60AKAAA unit is part of Arcoaire's ION series. The EVD4X60M24A coil, a 24.5 in. format, is shared by the series of this size; it must match the width of the furnace cabinet, with a sealed sheet-metal transition when needed.System ratingsThe pairing of the H4H5S60AKAAA outdoor unit and the EVD4X60M24A coil is not listed with SEER2 ratings in the AHRI certification directory. We confirm the ratings of the complete system before the quote; they also determine grant eligibility.Ratings, even certified ones, assume airflow that matches the test conditions. The work on the duct system is precisely what brings your home close to them. This page shows no rating for this pairing.Heating and cooling, day to dayIn cool weather, the heat pump heats alone; when the cold deepens and it is no longer enough, the thermostat brings in the furnace's electric elements as auxiliary heat. The auxiliary heat threshold is set at commissioning according to the heat loss of the house and your preferences. The heat pump's air is less hot than the air from the electric elements and its cycles are longer; during defrost, a plume of vapour comes out of the outdoor unit and the furnace's elements may come on briefly. In summer, the heat pump cools the whole house, and the coil removes humidity from the air, which drains through the condensate line. A well-balanced duct system sends cool air where it is lacking, especially upstairs.LogisVertThis pairing does not carry an amount on Hydro-Québec's LogisVert list of October 19, 2026. If the grant matters for your project, we will point you to an eligible pairing of comparable size.Installation on the existing furnaceThe coil sits on the furnace's air outlet, and a compatible thermostat decides when the heat pump heats alone and when the electric furnace takes over. We check the condition of the furnace, the airflow of its blower and the duct sizes before the quote. The outdoor unit goes on a stand, above the snow line, on a dedicated circuit. The outdoor unit is placed out of roof drip and away from bedroom windows, according to your municipality's rules, with an outdoor disconnect within sight; we check the capacity of the electrical panel, which already feeds the electric furnace. The insulated refrigerant line set is brazed under nitrogen, pressure-tested and evacuated, then the R-410A charge is adjusted at commissioning, along with the blower speed, the damper balancing and the thermostat's auxiliary heat threshold.MaintenanceReplace the system filter according to its format, keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and plan annual HVAC maintenance of the coil, condensate drain and electrical connections. In winter, white vapour during defrost is normal.A finer filter traps more dust, but it also raises static pressure. If you change filter types, ask us first. Finally, keep the return grilles clear and do not change the balancing dampers without noting their original position.AirGreen, for the life of the installationA family business active for more than fifteen years in Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the North Shore and the South Shore, we hold RBQ licences for ventilation, refrigeration and electrical work and carry $5,000,000 in liability insurance.
