Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussiere 2025

La Moussiere is the beating heart of the Mellot estate, a single 34-hectare sweep of limestone hillside that the family farms as its flagship, biodynamically, generation after nineteenth generation. This is the wine that makes the case for Sancerre as one of the great white terroirs of France. The soil is what Mellot calls Marnes de Saint Doulchard, iron-rich marl and limestone studded with ammonite fossils, on a south-west-facing slope just outside the town. 2025 was a strong year in the Centre-Loire after a difficult 2024: an early budbreak, a dry spring, and a hot August broken by well-timed rain, giving Sauvignon Blanc that came in ripe with its acidity fully intact. All Sauvignon Blanc, rested on its lees and raised across wood, concrete and steel, it is fresh and finely cut, with citrus, a green herbal snap, and that silky, chalky minerality only limestone gives. Serious Sancerre that still goes down easy.
