Konrad Krzyżanowski | Large Blue Expressionist Canvas Art | Clouds in Finland

Clouds in Finland — Konrad KrzyżanowskiA large Expressionist canvas print in blue and white. The white cloud domes climb the top two thirds and throw a pale, overcast daylight down the wall, so an entryway, a hotel reception or a boardroom reads cooler and taller the moment you walk in, while the narrow green shore and the flat dark water hold the bottom edge steady at standing eye level.Visual PresencePrinted two metres wide in an entryway, the pale cloud domes bounce a soft grey-white daylight back into a space that usually has no window of its own, so the hall reads brighter before anyone finds the switch. From the far end of the room three things carry: the big white dome at the centre, the deep blue gaps torn open around it, and the thin green and black band of shore along the bottom, which is enough structure to hold a wide wall without a second frame beside it. The dark water keeps all the weight low, so the print lifts the ceiling rather than pressing down on whoever walks under it.About the ArtKonrad Krzyżanowski (1872–1922), Expressionism, painted 1908. Konrad Krzyżanowski (1872–1922), Young Poland, painted 1908. We chose it because the sky is the subject and he said so himself, calling it crazy and drunken, set against a calm, cold coast. He taught at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts and took his students on painting trips to Lithuania and Finland; this came out of the Finnish summer of 1908. Most of his landscapes are small plein-air sketches, which is what earns this one a wall: it is built at a scale he rarely used, 110 by 124 centimetres.
